Motor Vehicle Accidents

There are many frightening things about enduring a car accident, but the fear of getting yourself taken care of should NOT be one of them. With a motor vehicle accident, pain may start immediately, or can take up to two weeks to fully manifest.

When to seek medical attention after a motor vehicle accident

Medical professionals agree that it is most effective to start treatment within the first 72 hours after an accident. Even if your accident is a "minor fender-bender", it is still important to be evaluated and treated.

Following a motor vehicle collision, 15% to 40% of patients who have acute neck pain will eventually develop chronic neck pain. Therefore, it is important to start treatment as soon as possible to decrease the chance of developing chronic symptoms.

Common injuries from motor vehicle accidents

Injury from a motor vehicle accident may range from minor whiplash to sustaining complex injuries that may require hospitalization.

After an accident symptoms may include, but are not limited to:

  • Pain shooting from the neck into the shoulder or arm
  • Neck swelling or tenderness
  • Muscle spasms
  • Difficulty with neck mobility
  • Headaches
  • Low back pain
  • Irritability
  • Poor sleep
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty with concentration or memory
  • Depression
  • Dizziness/light headedness
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Blurred vision

A whiplash or connective tissue injury is when the neck and body rapidly move backwards then forward, stretching the muscles and connective tissue. This condition is a very common injury after a car accident.

Acupuncture's role in longterm pain management

Acupuncture, which strengthens connective tissue, decreases inflammation, and facilitates muscular relaxation, is utilized to strategically treat the neck muscles as well as the tendinomuscular aspects of the spine. Acupuncture can stop the frustrating cycle of muscle spasms, pain and eventually loss of function by increasing circulation to the muscles and prompting the body to heal itself. Acupuncture can decrease the possibility of future pain, scar tissue and arthritis developing from the injury. Not only can acupuncture address the musculoskeletal issues, but it will also help one to get back to a state of balance.

Car accidents and insurance: what you need to know

Most auto-accident patients have their services covered 100% by automobile insurance, with no out-of-pocket expense. The State of Oregon is a no-fault state. This means that it doesn't matter if you caused the accident or not, you are entitled to receive personal injury protection (PIP) under your automobile insurance policy. Oregon law mandates that you and all passengers in your car have a minimum of $15,000 for each individual involved to cover any medical bills resulting from the car accident.
